The New York City-based practices of Perkins&Will, McNamara Salvia, JB&B Engineers, and Langan formed a unique interdisciplinary design team to support a joint venture development team lead by King Street Properties from Cambridge Massachusetts to be built by New York-based Pavarini McGovern, LLC, a part of the STO Building Group.
A unique team came together to combine the local knowledge of New York’s market and the way to design and build locally, to go along with an internationally respected expertise in developing and designing science facilities, with specific experience in the biggest S&T marking the country has known in Cambridge Massachusetts lending credence to the effort about to be undertaken.
Building off similar efforts between JB&B and Perkins&Will as well as shared efforts between Perkins&Will and King Street Properties, the team undertook a design effort to transform three existing structures into one cohesive building for one predetermined and dedicated use, on spec.
The early inclusion of the CM team in preconstruction was key to facilitating dialogue of local jurisdiction, construction market challenges to assumed constructibility issues, and team strategies for dealing with the challenges of marrying three structures from 100 years ago to meet the program needs.
